In recognition of the contribution from critics, artists, researchers, institutions and active personalities in the field of visual arts to national culture, in 1978 abca, sponsored by FUNARTE, instituted an Annual Award in the form of a trophy. Since then, this prize has been awarded to personalities in the art world.
The trophy has had different versions since its creation, being designed by renowned artists. All categories are named after a critic of recognized contribution to Brazilian culture and visual arts. Since 2000 the trophy has remained the same. The present administration chose to maintain this image for believing that it contributes even more to its immediate visual recognition.
Today, besides the trophy, abcagrants honorable mentions and, as special tributes, honors personalities in the visual arts scene.
The Award has gone through changes and additions along its story. Designed at first to put the artist in evidence, shortly after two other categories were defined; today there are ten, all encompassing visual arts:
Gonzaga Duque Award – for associated critic for their activities or book publication.
Mário Pedrosa Award – for contemporary artist.
Sérgio Milliet Award – for researcher (associated or not), for research published.
Ciccillo Matarazzo Award – for active personality in the art world.
Mário de Andrade Award – for art critic, for their trajectory.
Clarival do Prado Valladares Award – for artist, for their trajectory.
Maria Eugênia Franco Award – for exhibition curatorship.
Rodrigo Mello Franco de Andrade Award – for institution’s
Antônio Bento Award – for media repercussion
Paulo Mendes de Almeida Award – for organization of exhibition
Criteria and Types of Award
The criteria and types of award are defined in Item No. 11 of abca’s Regulations. Those can be summarized in the following way: prizes are awarded through the votes of all members – on national level – from nominations that any member can send to be discussed and approved at the entity’s General Assembly. Voting takes place through ballots. Counting is carried out by a members commission, being presented before the Assembly for verification and approval. Prizes are awarded at a ceremony.
The Trophy (foto do conjunto de troféus)
Since 2000, the trophy awarded to the winners is a sculpture by Nicolas Vlavianos, a Greek sculptor rooted in Brazil for over 20 years, with a vast and recognized production as a contemporary artist. A sculpture that is the object of desire of so many!
Mentions and/or tributes in the form of plaques and diplomas are annually awarded to personalities or institutions that have stood out in the field.
